Vaccine Madness

A recent Rasmussen poll got my attention. This poll, related to Covid-19 and vaccines, was taken by 1,016 likely voters on Jan. 5. One question asked was if you favored the federal or state government fining Americans for not taking the Covid-19 vaccine. There were 34% of those people who favored fines. When broken down, 55% of Democrats in the poll said fines should be imposed while 19% of Republicans approved this measure.

Another question was if you were in favor of putting people in designated facilities or locations if they refuse to get the vaccine. Although 71% of the total people polled strongly opposed it, 45% of Democrats were OK with it while 14% of Republicans also were in favor of it.

When asked the question if they would be in favor of imprisoning individuals who publicly question the efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccine on social media, television, radio, or in online or digital publicans, 67% overall opposed this measure. However, 48% of Democrats were in favor of imprisoning people for speaking unfavorably about the vaccine. Again, 14% of Republicans favored this measure.

Another question asked was would they favor or oppose children being taken from their parents temporarily if they refuse the Covid-19 vaccine. There were 80% who opposed overall (16% who approved). There were 29% of Democrats who approved of children being removed from their parents’ custody and 7% of Republicans.

I first saw some of the results from this poll from a story on Instagram from someone I follow. I could hardly believe it was true and had to verify that the poll existed.

This is extremely alarming to me, and should be to every freedom-loving American. There are people who live among you who think it’s quite alright to have the government take your kids or detain you in some sort of camp if you don’t get the Covid-19 vaccine. Some of them are going full communist and even think it’s OK to imprison you for speaking negatively about the efficacy of the vaccine in public. It seems to come more from one side of the ideological spectrum than the other, but I think even one person who is in favor of any of that is one too many.

Another recent shocker came from the editorial board of the Salt Lake Tribune. They publicly stated on their Twitter feed that they believed their National Guard should be deployed to “ensure that people without proof of vaccination would not be allowed, well, anywhere.”

My question has always been, “Why?” Why would people think this way? It seems like so many people have gone mad. This is a virus that 99% of people who get it survive. And now everyone knows that the vaccine does not prevent spread. It does help with the severity of the disease, but why would someone else care, unless they love me, if I protected myself from the severity of a disease. It’s simply none of their business.

And let’s not forget about the insane woman who got caught with her 13-year-old son in the trunk of her car while driving through a Covid testing site. She was there to test him and kept him in the trunk of her car because she didn’t want to be exposed. This happened near Houston, TX. Shockingly, she’s a teacher. She was charged for child endangerment, obviously, but an equally insane judge dropped it.

I believe the answer to “why” to all this madness is fear. The media, and even our government all the way up to the highest office, has continued to pound us with dreadful information about deaths and sickness, and it has scared many people.

To offer a full disclosure here, I did not get the vaccine and do not plan on getting it. Of course, I certainly respect people who have chosen to get the vaccine. It is a matter of weighing risks. For some people, it’s riskier not to get the vaccine. For others, possible effects from the vaccine are riskier to them than Covid-19. I think this idea is a no-brainer for most people, but from what we have learned from this poll is that there are many others who have allowed themselves to get worked into a frenzy and demand people who don’t line up behind them to get vaccinated to go to jail or lose their children.

Really the best way to turn things around is for people to stop listening to the news all the time and the constant barrage of numbers and live your life. There is nothing that will change things by watching those numbers and being afraid. Why the media and the government feel it’s necessary to continue with the constant parroting of numbers is another question for another time. I certainly have my opinions about that.

All anyone should do is protect themselves and their family the best they can and do what they see fit, and leave everyone else alone.

An Anniversary Observed

When I first think of the word anniversary, I think of something cheery, but I know that some anniversaries are dates you dread. I write this on the 10th anniversary, Jan. 27, 2022, of my husband's death. I often don’t know how to act or feel when this day comes around. Should I feel sad and grieve, or should I celebrate the time I had with him? I guess the best answer to that question for anybody is that there is no right or wrong thing to do. It depends on the person and the situation. There are times when this anniversary comes around, and I am so busy with life that I forget. There are other times that I just reflect on things. There are also times I just don’t want to think about it. And there are some times I am really sad. What made me start thinking about this is my daughter. She’s 17 now. She was 7 when her father died, and now has lived longer than she knew him. She has known her step-father more now. It's the same for my son who turned 20 in November - he's li...

A parent fan

My husband told me a few days ago that he was sure I loved those nail-biter games my kids play. I actually had to pause and think if that was really true. Yes, one of my greatest joys is to watch my children perform. I look forward to every football game, basketball game, play, track meet, recital… whatever they’re involved in, but it is also extremely painful to watch them compete or perform at times. My daughter has been involved in some very competitive basketball games lately, and although basketball is my favorite sport to watch, and was my favorite sport to play, I am almost sick to my stomach before some of these important games even start. And during the intense and close games, I can get very worked up. I can hear my heart pounding in my chest before the first quarter is over. I’m sure most of you parents out there feel the same way. I remember watching one Winter Olympics, and they had a camera on a set of American parents whose daughter was competing in ice skating. As I wat...

Is There an End to Motherhood?

Motherhood has been one of the greatest joys of my life. There is nothing like holding that newborn for the first time and seeing them do all their firsts. Parents have the opportunity of seeing things fresh with youthful eyes again, as well as watching their children try hard and succeed at a number of things. However, parenthood has also been one of the most difficult challenges of my life. I have cleaned up my share of puke and poop, protected the younger one from certain death by means of the older one, driven kids to numerous practices and school events and play dates, dried tears from heartbreak, taught them how to drive, endured many complaints and whining, received a handful of principal calls, punished them for bad choices, helped them through their failures, and sat beside them in the ER, but the hardest thing I've done so far is letting them go. My son, my oldest, graduated from high school in 2020. I was fortunate to send him off to a junior college in a small town, whi...
